"Our arts, culture and hospitality industry represents more than $100 million in economic activity, with more than 3,000 jobs in Providence alone," said Mayor Cicilline. "When you look at the momentum in this economy and consider the fact that this is discretionary, rather than need-based, spending, it is especially impressive."
The Mayor pointed to other external measures of success, commenting that Americans for the Arts praised the city's Creative Capital marketing campaign. In addition, Travel + Leisure Magazine readers chose Providence as their 6th favorite city in America for food and dining, and their 8th overall for cultural venues.
He exhorted the audience to keep up the great work, reminding them that a great product (the City of Providence) isn't enough. It takes active marketing to keep the success of the tourism industry rolling.
